Ever Realize 'Likability' Is Formulaic?

It's amazing how we can deconstruct something abstract, and turn it into a formula that's simple to copy and replicate!

In the chapter about likability in ENCHANTMENT, there are 12 things you can do to become better 'liked' by people (and no, I'm not talking about getting more folks to click on the 'Like' button on your Facebook profile here!)

One of them is the way you shake hands. And there are 8 parts to a great handshake, including:

* the Duchenne smile (go Google that one!)
* the duration for which you'll clutch someone's palm
* how far you thrust your hand into the other's personal space

...and five more.

I practiced my new handshake this morning - on my daughter!

She asked me why I was grinning like a gorilla! :-)

Why ENCHANTMENT?

Why today's books always follow a routine beats me. The first 2 chapters seem to HAVE to be about the structure of what's to come.

I always skip (or skim) them - and ENCHANTMENT is no different.

The one section I paused to read had the title: "Where should you draw the line?"

It talks about 'fake' enchantment (which is all about you) - and lists 5 questions to ask yourself to check if you're falling into that trap:

1. Are you asking them to do something you won't?

2. Do your interests conflict?

3. Have you hidden your conflicts of interest? (In other words, do you practice 'full disclosure')

4. Are you telling "noble lies"? (it's an ethics issue here!)

5. Are you enchanting gullible people? (Guy calls it immoral. I agree!)

These are questions anyone must ask themselves, in any area of life they are practicing 'enchantment', imho.

Started Reading ENCHANTMENT

Just started reading ENCHANTMENT by Guy Kawasaki today.

I only got as far as the acknowledgments and foreword, but already I like what I'm seeing!

Like this quote from Melody Beattie in the Acknowledgments:

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend."
